This one works with the gap between thoughts. You are not trying to stop thinking — you are noticing the small pause that is already there between one thought ending and the next beginning.

  1. 1Sit however you are comfortable. Let your eyes close. Do not change your breathing.
  2. 2Notice the breath going out. Then notice the small gap before the next one comes in.
  3. 3Same on the way in — notice it arrive, then the brief pause before it turns to go out.
  4. 4Rest your attention in those gaps rather than on the breath itself. No counting, no controlling.
  5. 5When your mind wanders off, that is normal. Just come back to noticing the next gap.

Sit for a moment before you get up. Nothing needs to have happened for this to have been worth doing.
