This one works with the gap between thoughts. You are not trying to stop thinking — you are noticing the small pause that is already there between one thought ending and the next beginning.
- 1Sit however you are comfortable. Let your eyes close. Do not change your breathing.
- 2Notice the breath going out. Then notice the small gap before the next one comes in.
- 3Same on the way in — notice it arrive, then the brief pause before it turns to go out.
- 4Rest your attention in those gaps rather than on the breath itself. No counting, no controlling.
- 5When your mind wanders off, that is normal. Just come back to noticing the next gap.
Sit for a moment before you get up. Nothing needs to have happened for this to have been worth doing.
